Re:Game Lab is a functional installation for game studies, data acquisition, and remix sampling. By providing physical access to consoles and games, the lab encourages practical research aimed at investigating the complex layers between game devices and game experiences. In particular, I am interested both in deconstructing and reinterpreting games in a social context as well as fashioning new aesthetic objects from the research data.
The initial space is located in CRCA (Center for Research in Computing and the Arts) at UC-San Diego. Culturally-relevant consoles from 1972 forward and thousands of games are all available to play immediately. The space provides unprecedented access to researchers, designers, and artist by enabling acquisition of game play recordings as well as interaction with legacy hardware in it's native format as well as emulation. Both the lab concept and the VGSU (Video Gameplay Sampling Unit) are intended for other game studies initiatives to adopt.
